Old Meyer House, Belleville, Illinois

By , September 13, 2008 1:35 am

The Old Meyer House is an old brick house in Belleville, Illinois was built around 150 years ago by a coal miner named Jakob Meyer.  On June 26, 1923, in the parlor of the house, 77-year-old Jakob, despondent about his deteriorating health, fired a 32-caliber bullet into his head.  All was fine until 40 years later.

The Walta sisters opend a music school in the house in 1956.  They didn’t actually live there and it was empty at night and on the weekends.  On August 28, 1962, a sailor friend of the sisters drowned in an accident at sea.  Two days later, the sisters started feeling his presence in the house.  They heard the back door open and close by itself, followed by soft footsteps going down the hall to the sailor’s favorite chair.

This continued for months until one day the footsteps were different.  They were much heavier and journeyed into the parlor where the faint outline of a large man dressed in gray could be seen standing in the middle of the room.  Sometimes they could smell cigarette smoke.  Soon thereafter, chairs, umbrellas and other objects began to move around on their own.

The terrified sisters did some research on the house and discovered that the previous owner had committed suicide. Things have calmed down a bit, but the faint odor of cigar smoke can still be smelled on occasion and the sound of chairs moving about can still be heard.  Every once in a while, those in the house hear a muffled gunshot.
